High Attendance Day

Thursday, September 20, 2018

The Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel have designated Thursday, September 20th as statewide “High Attendance Day” to emphasize that consistent attendance is essential for success in school. This date is set aside to assist with working to increase student attendance because we know that students who are at school on time have a higher success rate than those who aren't.

On High Attendance Day, Kentucky’s public elementary, middle and high schools may compete in small-school or large-school categories. Six winners will be determined statewide based on each individual school’s performance, regardless of its district’s showing. The school in each category with the highest percentage attendance for September 20 will receive a minimum $500. If the school has more than 500 students, the award will increase based on enrollment.

  • During school hours access to Monroe County High School and Monroe County Wellness Center will be from Old Mulkey Rd.
  • Access to Monroe County Middle School will be from Gamaliel Rd.
  • Chains will be up from 8:00am to 2:30pm.
  • This will allow us to have better control of the traffic on the MCHS and MCMS campuses which will provide a safer campus for our students and staff.
  • We have experienced drivers using the campuses as an access road from Gamaliel Rd. to Old Mulkey Rd.  During the school day we have students who use the area between the schools for physical education and other activities.  To reduce the risk of someone getting hurt, we are closing access from Gamaliel Rd. to Old Mulkey Rd. during school hours.
  • In the near future, we will be installing a check-in station at the entry of MCHS.  This will allow us to monitor who enters and exits the student parking lot.

Monroe County Middle School would like to take a moment to recognize all of our students that competed at STLP state competition in Lexington, Ky. These students worked very hard with their community and other schools to complete projects for SLTP showcase. We had three showcase groups: Germ Janitors, School Bus Safety and Christmas Around the World: Haiti. The School Bus Safety group received “best in group” allowing them to go to level three of the judging rounds. Our STLP also had four young men completing in the Race to the Future slot car competition. Emmanuel Calles-Gonzales received the reward for fastest slot car out of the middle school category. Gavin Wilson made it to round four of the Sumobot competition with his robot he built out of Legos and sensors. Jacob Irvin was invited to help video events and helped in producing a video. A feature video made it to the final round of juding too. We are so proud of these students, their hard work and accomplishments.

Rogers Explorer Program Rogers Explorer Program

Lydia Emberton, Alayna Hodges, Gracie Taylor, and Madison Hollinsworth have been selected for the Rogers Explorer Program. The Rogers Explorers program is an intensive three-day, two-night program focused on cultivating skills in leadership, technology, math, science, and community service. There are 180 students selected in the Center of Rural Development area that were selected and this is the first year that MCMS has had more than three students for the program. The activities throughout the program are both educational and fun. Classroom projects are very hands-on, so do not expect to be bored!  Explorers are able to actively participate in practical college courses, fine-tune leadership skills, and develop a network of friends and resources throughout our Southern and Eastern Kentucky region.

Lydia and Gracie will attend Lindsey Wilson College, Alayna will go to Asbury University, and Madison will visit Morehead State University. Congratulations to these young ladies.
